Song made with Loopy in a new Indian movie

Hi people,

Just wanted to share this with you all. I know this is not the first time Loopy has been used in large scale music compositions but still, it is yet another awesome use of this app.

Recently, there was a new Tamil language movie from India and the music was composed by A R Rahman. I guess everyone knows him? Well, he is of the Jai Ho (and many other awesome songs) fame. Anyway, in the new movie (movie name is O Kadhal Kanmani, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Kadhal_Kanmani), A R Rahman used Loopy for composing a very nice song.

The song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy3m1TgVTRI

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Kadhal_Kanmani_(soundtrack)):
"Parandhu Sellu Vaa" was composed using the iPad app "Loopy", which creates loops, since Ratnam wanted it to feature minimal orchestration.[9] It is a slow, sensuous track.[20] When the phrase "Nanaindhu Kollava" appears at the middle of the song, the minimal violin based orchestration begins and runs until the end of the track. The song has sixty odd non-repeating words.[20]".

I thought this is a beautifully done song and in the movie, you can see the actor playing with the Loopy app on his iPad as the song begins. Just wanted to give a shout out to everyone behind Loopy for the great app they've created :)

Enjoy!

  • Wow, that's really cool! Thanks for the heads-up =)

  • You're welcome.

The film was directed by a very famous Indian director (Mani Ratnam). Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman have been a successful duo and almost all their movies and soundtrack have been mega hits.

And this movie is no different. I saw the movie and I have listened to this song many times now. It's truly a beautiful piece and even after the minimal orchestration starts midway, I thought Loopy stood out all the way till the end. Beautiful app used beautifully well by an amazing musician and music composer.

PS., Even though I'm from India and a Tamilian (like A R Rahman), I love music from all over the world and I think Rahman is one of the best musicians from India ever, one of the best musicians in the world and to see him use Loopy to compose a song for the soundtrack of a huge movie made by none other than Mani Ratnam, is an immense approval of Loopy and it's awesomeness. Of course, the credit goes to the developer.

  • You'll probably like the teaser video by Sony to get a real glimpse of the OST situation here :

  • OH wow, is that a clip from the movie?? If so, this is actually very big, bigger than Jimmy Fallon I dare say. maybe not for the iOS market but definitely for the amount of exposure to a mainstream audience.

  • Yes, it is from the movie (please see the first post). It is a song sequence from the movie.

  • Yeah, i understood that the song was used in the soundtrack, but I somehow didn't realize that Loopy and the iPad actually get some visual screen time in the film itself. impressive!

Haha! Yes, the app itself did get mentioned and got screen time :)

Just before the starting of the song, the girl asks the guy (the hero) about what is he doing playing on his ipad and he replies saying that it's an app for making music called loopy and then they go on to the song...

There is a YouTube video of A R Rahman's interview on the making of the soundtrack, where he mentions the app and how the song was made.

  • Whoa! That's freaking amazing!

  • Michael, you're a star! Maybe an Oscar for technical achievement?

  • A R Rahman's other tools as featured in his Apple.com interview. His interview here made me buy a Mac! still love it!
