How do you add an overdub without muting original loop?

I might be missing something here, but every time I record a new loop all the backing mutes. Fine for writing tunes, but not so good for live performance. I want to do live looping with a guitar, so recording a loop while hearing the backing is important. I couldn't see an option for unmuting backing. Is it because I'm using the built in mic on my iPad?

    Just plugged headphones in and I could hear original loops while recording. Nice one!
