Humble Suggestion from a guy who makes his living playing music using a looper

edited November 2014 in General

After thinking about how great Loopy HD is and how close it is to being able to replace EVERY other looper available today, I started to think about what features would be necessary to provide this functionality.

So I came up with this idea and wanted to share it with Michael (and the rest of you) in hopes that the Loopy HD team would consider adding this idea to some version in the future.

The idea is this:

Create a comprehensive list of Loopy HD internal functions and allow them to be strung together in a 'list' and then bound to a MIDI or BlueTooth event. (think of it as a 'macro' for MIDI or BlueTooth)

The available Loopy HD internal functions would need to be expanded/modified a bit and I've compiled a list of what would be needed to make this happen:

Track Selection Functions:

  • Select All
  • Select None
  • Select Next Track
  • Select Previous Track
  • Select Next Group
  • Select Previous Group
  • Select Track (1 - 12)
  • Select Group (A - D)
  • Toggle Track Selection (1 - 12)
  • Toggle Group Selection (A - D)

Track Functions:

  • Record Track (1 - 12) (Replace Yes / No)
  • Overdub Track (1 - 12)
  • Clear Track (1 - 12)
  • Play Track (1 - 12) (Direction Fwd/Rev) (Play Once Yes / No)
  • Mute Track (1 - 12) (Toggle / Force)
  • Solo Track (1 - 12) (Toggle / Force)
  • Add to Solo (1 - 12)
  • Remove from Solo (1 - 12)
  • Toggle Track Mute (1 - 12) (Toggle / Force)
  • Toggle Track Record (1 - 12) (Toggle / Force)

Group Functions:

  • Create Group (A - D)
  • Clear Group (A - D)
  • Record Group (A - D)
  • Re-Record Group (A - D)
  • Clear Group (A - D)
  • Play Group (A - D) (Direction Fwd/Rev) (Play Once Yes / No)
  • Mute Group(A - D) (Toggle / Force)
  • Solo Group (A - D) (Toggle / Force)
  • Add to Group (A - D)
  • Remove from Group (A - D) Track (1 - 12)
  • Toggle Group Mute (A - D) (Toggle / Force)
  • Toggle Group Record (A - D) (Toggle / Force)

Mix Functions:

  • Adjust Track Volume (1 - 12)
  • Adjust Group Volume (A - D)
  • Adjust Track Pan (1 - 12)
  • Adjust Group Pan (A - D)
  • Fading Track (1 - 12) (On / Off)
  • Fading Group(A - D) (On / Off)

Transport Functions:

  • Play
  • Pause
  • ReStart
  • Count in Track (1 - 12) (On / Off)
  • Count in Group (A - D) (On / Off)
  • Count out Track (1 - 12) (On / Off)
  • Count out Group (1 - 12) (On / Off)
  • Set Time Signature (2/2 thru 12/8)
  • Click (On / Off)
  • Click (Count off ONLY)
  • Click Starts Transport (Yes / No)
  • MIDI Sync In (On / Off)
  • MIDI Sync Out (On / Off)

Housekeeping Functions:

  • Clear All Tracks
  • Adjust Session Tempo
  • Tap Tempo (slightly modified - see below)
  • Double Clock Length
  • Halve Clock Length
  • Reset Session
  • Toggle Track Synchronization
  • Cancel Pending Actions on Track (1 - 12 ... optional)
  • Metronome (On / Off)
  • Metronome Off After X Clicks (number of clicks)

I know this is a long message, but I believe the list is fairly thorough and comprehensive.

Hopefully Michael will take a look at it and not be overwhelmed and instead be inspired to implement it.

But I am confident that if this 'MIDI Macro' suggestion is added, EVERYONE will be switching to Loopy HD to do their looping - even those us of who are die hard hardware fans.

Thanks for considering!

Larry

The macro MIDI idea can be done by a third app that translates one message into multiple messages before sending onward to Loopy HD. It's pretty easy to set this up with MIDI Designer.
For example a simple mute/unmute binding can be made which affects several tracks simultaneously.

This is a great list. I agree, it would draw lots of customers. And definitely push Loopy further up the list of apps that are "why I bought an iPad".
